Photo Shoot Update

Well my Taffetadarlings, I'm making progress raising funds for my Spring 2013 look book shoot -- thank you to everybody who has contributed so far!!  I'm still pushing and I have just one week left to achieve the goal, so any help would be appreciated.  And please spread the word!

Finding an affordable venue/studio to shoot in can be a difficult challenge in New York City, but I'm going to be as frugal as possible.  I searched high and low to find a spot for my Fall 2012 "Modern World" runway show and even though I found a good deal, it still ended up costing $1500 for the day.  But, I needed a bit more space to accommodate the audience and a small runway, so I'm able to work with something smaller for the photo shoot.

As I stated in my Kickstarter campaign, a good model can make or break the shoot.  However, that doesn't mean that I can hire any girl I want, I have to be thrifty since I'm working within a tight budget.  But, I've been lucky enough to find talented and experienced girls in the past who, unlike Linda Evangelista, WILL get out of bed for less than 10K per day -- a lot less.  And thank goodness, one thing there will never be in NYC is a shortage of (eager) talent.

Another way that I'm able to swing it with a small budget is the fact that I don't use a stylist like many people do.  Typically, a stylist a very important asset in any photo shoot, but more so for magazine editorials where they have to pull pieces from multiple designers in order to create a story.  Since I'm using solely my own pieces, there isn't much need for a stylist.  Still, a lot of designers depend on stylists to come up with the right image for the book.  I think I've mentioned before that I'm a control freak, so I actually prefer to handle the "image" and the styling myself.  I mean, I designed the clothes, I think I should know how I want them to be portrayed.

And then there's the hair and makeup team.  I know for a fact that it easily costs $100 and upward just to have one's makeup done for an event (basically one hour of work), so you can imagine what it might cost to hire people for an entire day.  The good thing is that stylists and artists typically offer day rates that make it more affordable than if they were charging you hourly for a twelve hour shoot.  Also, I have found that stylists and makeup artists are often anxious to participate in a fashion photo shoot because they can push the boundaries a little bit (or a lot) more than they are able to with their usual clients.  So, I've been lucky in the past to find talented people who are willing to work within my budget.

Obviously, there is still the photographer's fee (and their assistant) which accounts for a fairly large chunk of the funding, as well as book printing and lunch for everyone during the shoot. Well, now that you have a better idea of the costs involved and the break down, I hope that you contribute if you can.  Click the link below to check out my project!  Thank you!!

Minty Fresh!

Being a typical female, I love it when I'm right.  And I am right 100% of the time -- even when I'm wrong.  As a designer, I don't believe in following trends, but I still get a little gratification when I see strong evidence that my brand is right on target along with some of the best names on the runway.

It was more than a year ago that I selected my fabrics and color palette for my Spring 2012 "Biohazard Collection" and it's interesting to see how many other people were feeling this fresh minty blue color as well (as seen in the photo below).  Since my collection was titled "Biohazard," I opted for toxic sounding color names and labled this color "Vapor Blue."

Spring 2012 Campaign

I love this color so much (and decided that it looked great with a summer tan) that I have worn this dress twice already!  Granted, I fill it out quite a bit more than the model and I don't consider that a bad thing.  In fact, I have gotten a lot of compliments on the dress and I find that it's very helpful for potential customers to see things on regular people and not always on runway models.

Pantone and Stacy Lomman : New York, Choose Orange

screen shot from Pantone's website

And the winner is... drum roll please... Tangerine Tango!!!  Pantone just announced its color of the year and it's bright and cheery, just in time for the holidays.  Now, some people are afraid of such bold hues and feel that they don't look good in orange, but if you select the right pieces and style them the right way (I agree... easier said than done), you can "make it work."

I tend to wear mainly neutrals myself, however, I've been feeling orange for quite a while.  In fact, I did not one, but two posts on the happy color back in June.  I guess I just couldn't get enough because a little later, I included an orange gown in my Spring 2012, Biohazard Collection.  I called my color of choice, Safety Orange, which evokes an entirely different emotion than its relative, Tangerine Tango, but it's still just as lively.

So, taffetadarlings, be bold, be fearless, go forth and conquer.  Wear some orange... you might just like it!

Night of Stars!

I'm a lucky girl!  I was fortunate enough to be invited (by the publisher of Lookonline, Ernest Schmatolla) to cover FGI's 28th Annual Night of Stars on October 27.  You can read the full article on Lookonline's website HERE

with David Byrne

Though it was thrilling to be surrounded by so many fashion greats under one roof, I must admit that for me, the highlight of the evening was meeting Talking Heads' David Byrne.  I'm a long time fan.  He was extremely gracious and I was, well, hopefully not a giddy mess!

Luckily, I was able to squeeze into one of the new Biohazard pieces from my spring 2012 collection and I was thrilled to accessorize the orange gown with some stunning Wendy Brandes earrings.  Like I said, I'm a lucky girl!

Springtime in Paris

Ah, Paris Fashion Week, how I wish I could be there.  But, I've got more important things to do -- lots of follow-up with my Spring '12 Biohazard Collection.  Still, I love to look at other collections and as a designer, it's kind of fun to see who is doing similar things to you and what trends are emerging as the shows wind down.

I tend to have a short attention span and a I hit a saturation point very quickly.  Also, I look for new things and gravitate away from labels that have become too attainable or mainstream.  That's the snob in me!  Recently, I've discovered Carven, an old French label started in 1945 by Madame Carven Mallet.  Not much has happened with this brand in the past 20 years, but when designer, Guillaume Henry stepped in a couple of years ago, people took notice.  Henry, who previously worked with Paule Ka (love) and Givenchy (love love), seems to be just what Carven needed.

BIOHAZARD Is The New BLACK

I'm happy to report that my Spring 2012 show was a success and the Biohazard Collection was well received.  I'll be putting together a post very soon, but I wanted to share a few photos as well as a glowing review from WendyB (click here).

Stay tuned... more to come!

Case In Point

So, here we are just five days before my Kickstarter run finishes up and the entire Eastern U.S. is bracing itself for Hurricane Irene.  This is the perfect weekend for me to "hunker down" and make some progress on my "Biohazard" samples for my spring 2012 line (so long as I don't lose power).  Let me just reiterate the basis of the collection...

The concept behind the collection stems from the chaos happening in the world, from the economy to all of the natural disasters that have recently occurred (and will continue to do so). The need to start dressing for protection is inevitable and our wardrobes will have to be fashionable AND functional -- think “chic hazmat” gear!

Scary, huh?  It's almost like I willed this hurricane to happen (but I would never do that!).  So, get in on the action while you can and get involved.  Only five days left to sponsor me and even though I have met the fundraising goal, there are always so many extra expenses to account for and, of course, you get your name in the program.  Any amount is helpful and I'm extremely grateful for each and every person who contributes!!!!!

The auction for one of my spring pieces is still on and the current bid is $650.  If you would like to own a custom-fit piece (of your choice) from my "Biohazard" Collection, contact me through this blog or through Kickstarter and give me your bid.  Stay safe taffetadarlings!

BREAKING NEWS!

I'm just eight short days from the end of my Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for my Spring 2012 "Biohazard" Collection!  On one hand, I'm excited, motivated and energized, while on the other hand, I'm a bit nervous since I'm still $1500 short of my goal.  As most of you know, if I fall short, the plug is pulled on the project and it gets filed under "Unsuccessful."  Let me just say that I do not "do" unsuccessful.  No way.  I'm a Type A personality with an extra gene of determination.  I don't like to lose and I give everything I do 110% effort.  Scared?  Good, I will use any tactic right now to get donations!

just some of the choices... more where these came from...

So, I'm pulling out the heavy artillery -- I'm offering to auction off a custom piece from new line.  The price on Kickstarter is $2,000 and you can snatch up the last spot by pledging that amount if you want to be absolutely sure to secure a garment.  Or, you can take a shot at bidding for it and try your luck. I've added a new "awards category" on my Kickstarter page starting at $499 for the opening bid!  Any takers?  It's a STEAL!!!  Let the bidding begin...

Of course, if you want to contribute (which I would appreciate beyond belief), you can pledge ANY amount, from $5 upward.  If I can get 100 people to donate $5 each, that is a HUGE help!  200 people -- even better!!  Pass this along to anyone you know who loves fashion!

13!!

To the superstitious, it's a number that represents bad luck.  Not me!  Thirteen reminds me of the age I was finally allowed to get my ears pierced (which was the only thing that distinguished me from a boy at the time!).  Also, thirteen was actually the date of my first runway show, so I consider it to be a very good number.  That said, there are only thirteen more days to contribute to my new collection for Spring 2012.  Most of you know the collection is titled "Biohazard" and I'm so anxious to make it happen!  Right now, I'm 75% funded so I really need to make a huge push for that last 25%.  With the Kickstarter funding, it's all or nothing and I simply cannot come up short, so spread the word and help if you can.  Thank you!!

...and if you think I'm kidding about the boy thing, just ask my 13 yr. old self!  LOL

It Could Be Your Lucky Day!!

Hello gorgeous!

This little number from my fall 2011 "French Resistance" collection has been quite popular.  So, I decided to offer two of these in neoprene to my Kickstarter supporters who sponsored $500 toward my spring 2012 "Biohazard" collection.  They were scooped up so quickly, I thought I had better add ONE MORE!

If you love this style and you love me and want to support the collection, you can have this chic, little motorcycle jacket in a light weight, supple neoprene... custom fit for you!  I'm only offering ONE, so if you want it, get it now!  Time is running out, the Kickstarter funraising ends soon.

If this tough, sexy jacket is a too rich for your blood, you can still get some really cool prizes for donating to my project.  Any amount is helpful and always appreciated.  It's getting close to the end and I still need to raise quite a bit of captial to cover the show costs.  And with Kickstarter, it's "all or nothing," so if I come up even one dollar short, the project ends with a big zero.  That's just not acceptable, so let's make this spring line happen!

Thanks to all of my taffetadarlings!
